Commonly used paper thickness for printed materials
2024-06-24
Paper has its own thickness, and the terms "thick" and "thin" are just adjectives. The specific measurement method for paper thickness is to calculate it in grams per square meter, which can accurately determine how thick a piece of paper is. People in the printing and paper industry use a measurement standard called "GSM" to measure the thickness of paper.
GSM is the international unit of weight for paper, which means" grams per square meter". As the name suggests, you need to cut off one square meter of paper and calculate its weight in grams. This is the meaning of GSM in printing paper. 70GSM is 70 grams per square meter, and 80GSM is 80 grams per square meter. The larger the GSM, the higher the paper quality. The thinner a piece of paper, the lighter it becomes and the lighter its weight becomes. For example, if one square meter of paper is taken for printing bills and invoices and weighed, the weighing scale will display a weight of 70-80 grams. If it is one square meter of printed business card paper, it is generally between 250-300g.
Different thicknesses of paper are suitable for different printed materials, for example, newsprint is 30-50gsm, laptops are 60-80gsm, promotional flyers are 100-170gsm, business cards and membership cards are 300-400gsm, and gift boxes are 400+gsm.
The thickness and weight of paper are directly proportional. The larger the GSM, the thicker the paper. This is what the advertising industry often refers to as the weight of paper and its significance.
Paper manufacturers use GSM as the standard method for measuring paper thickness, and different thicknesses of paper correspond to different printing applications. Paper with thicknesses of 60g, 80g, and 170g can often be seen in places where printing paper is sold.

The paper used for notebooks, diaries, copiers, and inner pages of novels is 60-70g;
The paper used for bills, letters, receipts, etc. is 80-100g;
The inner pages of magazines and booklets. The thickness of paper used for posters, tickets, coupons, and leaflet is 130-170g;
